How this reading time calculator works

  1. Paste or type your text in the box.
  2. Pick a words-per-minute speed. Average silent reading is often near 200–250 WPM. Speaking aloud is slower.
  3. Read the estimated minutes under the box. The result updates as you type.

The formula is simple: reading time in minutes = word count ÷ words per minute. Empty text shows zero. Very short drafts round up to one minute once there is at least one word, so a tweet-length line does not show “0 min”.

When to use it

Use a reading time calculator before you publish a blog post, newsletter, or landing page. Readers often decide whether to open an article based on how long it will take. Speakers can switch to 130 WPM to estimate how long a script will take out loud.

If you also need a plain word counter, that tool lives on the One Leaf Kit home page.

Questions

Does this upload my text?

No. Word count and timing run in the browser on your device.

What reading speed should I choose?

For most blog posts, start with 200 or 250 words per minute. Use 130 if you will read the text aloud. Use 300 only for light skimming.

How are words counted?

Any group of letters or numbers separated by whitespace counts as a word. The same rule as a basic word counter.
